How to Make Time for Creativity with Your Child (Even When You're Busy)

Sometimes it’s really hard to make the time to be creative with your child – life is just so full on! There is a job to hold down, activities to take the kids to, things you need to do just to keep afloat! I know, I’ve been there too.
And then someone (yes, sorry that’s me today!) comes along and gives you creative things to do and you really want to do them but… the mess, the time, the space…
The thing to remember is that being creative isn’t just about getting messy or even having space. Creative thinking can happen when we do almost anything. It solves a problem. It comes from curiosity. Yes, it can have outcomes like a painting or a model, but to start it doesn’t have to be that way.
Here are 3 simple ways to bring creativity into your family life:
EXPLORE
Fitting creativity into your everyday life can be as easy as taking your child to the park and finding insects. Being curious and exploring their world is a great way to learn about things and develop a knowledge that could be used later. It doesn’t have to be insects. Find an interest. Trains? Head to the station and take a train ride instead of using the car. Butterflies? Learn about them and when it’s butterfly season, make sure to get outside for a walk in the woods and see which ones you can spot. Curiosity is a great funnel for creative minds!
OBSERVE
Really take in the world. Walk without phones. Look around you. Talk about things you notice happening. Make up stories – what is that dog doing in that flowerbed? How did that chair get on the beach? Why do raindrops fall down and not up? Make it fun and question reality sometimes!
SOLVE A PROBLEM
Treasure hunts are problems! Easter egg hunts are problems! Looking for the remote control is definitely a problem to solve! Sometimes we think too hard about what we could give our kids as a problem to solve, but really problems have many guises, we just have to simplify our own thinking and work out what they could find out.
Decide today on one thing you could do as a starting point.
Yes, you could also bring in some more traditionally creative activities (draw that butterfly; write that story about the chair; create a treasure hunt) to do together and maybe you will, but start somewhere.
Use the time walking back from school or go exploring at the weekend. Pick a day that fits in and make a plan to get outside for an hour. You don’t need anything but your eyes - and maybe a bag for any treasure you find!
