If you’ve always fancied drawing or painting but never known where to start, you’re in the right place. I run friendly, beginner-focused art workshops in Kent — in and around Canterbury and Whitstable — plus live online sessions you can join from your own kitchen table. There’s no talent test, no pressure, and absolutely no need to have picked up a pencil since school. Just a relaxed space, a bit of gentle guidance, and time to enjoy making something with your own hands.

Beginner-Friendly Art Classes in Canterbury and Whitstable
Most of my in-person art classes happen in and around Canterbury, with regular sessions in Whitstable too. Here’s what’s usually on:

Online Art Workshops You Can Join from Home
Can’t get to Kent, or prefer to learn from your own sofa? My live online art workshops run over Zoom, so you can join from anywhere in the UK (or beyond — I won’t check your postcode). We cover the same beginner-friendly ground as the in-person sessions: drawing basics, watercolour, confidence-building exercises and plenty of encouragement.
If you enjoy the online sessions and want to keep going, Create: The Art Community is my online membership — regular classes, feedback on your work, and a warm group of fellow beginners cheering each other on. It’s the natural next step after a workshop.
Why Learn Art as an Adult?
Learning to draw or paint as an adult isn’t just a nice hobby (although it is that too). Regular creative practice is brilliant for slowing down, switching off and giving your brain something absorbing to do that isn’t a screen. Many of my regulars came to one workshop “just to try it” and found it became the highlight of their week.
You don’t need natural talent — drawing is a skill, and like any skill it improves with practice and decent teaching. If you’re curious about what a creative habit could do for you, I’ve written about how learning art can change your life over on the blog.
What to Expect at Your First Workshop
Wondering what you’re letting yourself in for? All materials are provided unless the event page says otherwise — just bring yourself. Groups are kept deliberately small so nobody gets lost at the back, and there’s always time for individual help if you get stuck.
Art groups are self-directed, but I am around for advice and support. At other sessions, I teach step by step, starting from the very beginning: how to look at what’s actually in front of you, and how to build up a drawing or painting in simple stages. You’ll go home with something you made yourself — and usually a surprise at how much better it is than you expected.
Nobody will make you show your work, there’s no grading, and “I haven’t drawn since school” is the sentence I hear most often. If you’d like a feel for how I teach before booking, my blog post on how to start drawing is a good place to begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any experience?
None at all. Most people who come to my workshops are complete beginners, and every session is designed with that in mind. If you can hold a pencil, you’re qualified.
What do I need to bring?
Usually nothing — materials are included in the ticket price for most events, from paper and pencils to paints and brushes. Check the individual event listing for anything specific, and wear something you don’t mind getting the odd splash of paint on.
Are the workshops just for adults?
Most of my regular sessions are designed for adults — many of my attendees are trying art for the first time in decades. Some seasonal and holiday events welcome families and teenagers; the event listing will always say who it’s suitable for.
Can I buy a workshop as a gift?
Yes! A gift card is a lovely way to give someone a creative nudge — they can put it towards any workshop or event.
Where do the workshops take place?
Mostly in Canterbury and Whitstable, with regular outings to gorgeous spots like The Flower Farm at Denstroude and Canterbury Cathedral. Online sessions run over Zoom. Each event listing includes the exact venue.
I’m nervous — will everyone be better than me?
Almost everyone arrives nervous and leaves wondering why they waited so long. My workshops attract kind, curious people who are all starting out too. You’ll fit right in.
