A couple of weeks ago, I spoke about bonding over crafts with your kids. This time, I want to ask if itâs too late to become creative?
Because I know that some of you are thinking that!
So many people say to me:
âIâm not creativeâ
âI canât even fold paper straightâŚâ
âI donât know how you do it!â
And moreâŚ
They have lost the belief that creativity exists in them.
Is it too late?
NO!
How can it be too late when you arenât learning something new; you werenât born un-creative; you donât need to take classes to find it?!
If youâve read my blog for a long time now, you will already know that I will tell you (again!) that creativity exists in you. How it manifests itself may be different from other people, but itâs there!
I believe some of the key features of creativity are:
¡ Problem-solving
¡ Being unafraid to fail
¡ Persistence
Now, you may not be a great artist (but it really is possible to learn!) and you may find crafting too fiddly, but I bet you can think of something that you do where you use these three things. Times at home or at work, where you have to think outside the box and work out a different way to do something, maybe.
Creativity exists in all of us. Itâs just the situation where we use it that might be different.
So, is it too late to be creative?
Well, it canât be, because you already are!
Let me startâŚ
Back in 2016 I was stressed. Work had over-loaded my brain and I couldnât think about anything else. My home life was non-existent because I was exhausted and couldnât be bothered to do anything. Looking back, it was so clear that I had lost my creativity. My work had taken itâs toll on my body and mind.
I have (until that point) always been creative, as in, I love art and craft. I spend many hours creating, making and having fun with my kids as they grew. When I went to Uni as an older student, I already knew I wanted to specialize in creative subjects. I took Design and Technology and Science (yes, science! Creative? YES!). I knew that this would challenge my curious mind and help me be a better teacher once I qualified.
During my course, I was able to pull on those skills I picked out above. I had to because this was a huge challenge for me. A young mum. Kids aged 5&8. A home to share the running of and a three year degree to get! đ It took a LOT of juggling and some VERY creative time management!
Iâm sure some of you will be sitting there, nodding along with me. Parents are naturally very creative; we have to be! But if you get yourself into a situation like me, where things take over and give your creativity a bashing, then we often donât bother to try to find it again, even when it would be so beneficial for your family.
Is this you?
